Overview: In the 135 years since Gilbert McDougal first policed the streets of Sioux City, more than 550 sworn officers have worked for the department. In addition, an uncountable number of civilians have lent support, from secretarial and bookkeeping, to parkettes, janitors, and communications center operations.Writing a comprehensible history is beyond our capabilities, but publishing an entertaining book full of photographs and stories representing the past one 135 years is possible.We have tried to find pictures representing all eras of the department. The further back we go, the fewer the pictures, but that is understandable, if regrettable. We have attempted to make this book as entertaining as possible by including a maximum number of pictures. We tried to include everyone, an impossible task, but we hope you or yours is included somewhere. There are no individual accomplishments in this work, since all reality, nothing is accomplished single-handedly. The only exceptions to this are the accounts of the deaths in the line of duty of Chief of Detectives, James G. Britton, and Captain Joseph P. Davidchik.It is with gratitude that we have worked on this book, since doing so has enriched our knowledge and memories of this department and the men and women in it to a much greater degree that just looking at the finished work.It is our sincere hope that after reading this book, someone will decide to finish what we have started and publish another history some years down the road, when our history has become more enriched and more memories have been added to the pages of the Sioux City Police Department.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Finished it in a couple of days. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Glad I picked this up.
