Overview: Sumber ilham saya untuk menerbitkan buku ini yang diberi judul "Hang Tuah: Tokoh Epik Nasional" ialah isteri tercinta, Sagiyah binti Salikin. Semenjak mula berkenalan dengannya pada awal tahun 1961, saya sering bercerita dengannya mengenai "Hang Tuah", berdasarkan kepada satu latihan ilmiah yang saya tulis pada akhir tahun 1960 yang bertajuk "Hang Tuah dalam Hikayat Hang Tuah dan Sejarah Melayu". Hang Tuah adalah wira yang saya kagumi semenjak saya membaca buku "Pelbagai Chetera Melayu" (karangan Abdul Hadi Hj. Hassan - Printers Limited Singapore, 1932) di Sekolah Melayu Tapah pada tahun 1948. Apabila Professor R. Roolvink, Ketua Jabatan Pengajian Melayu, Universiti Malaya mencadangkan kepada saya untuk menulis mengenai Hang Tuah, saya anggap itu satu peluang keemasan bagi saya untuk mengkaji secara lebih mendalam mengenai wira itu. Beliau sendiri mengawasi penulisan latihan ilmiah saya. Sebagai teks pengkajian, Professor R. Roolvink mencadangkan supaya saya membaca terbitan Malaya Publishing House bagi Hikayat Hang Tuah, dalam SIRI KESUSASTERAAN MELAYU BILANGAN 3, 4 Jilid, 1959. Bagi Sejarah Melayu, penulis telah menggunakan terbitan Djambatan Djarkarta, edisi Abdullah dan Situmurang.Pada akhir tahun 1964, Sagiyah telah mengandung buat kali kedua, dan telah disahkan akan melahirkan anak kembar. Pada masa itu, kami tidak mencuba untuk mengenal pasti jantina kedua-dua bayi itu. Sagiyah bersetuju di atas cadangan saya bahawa sekiranya anak-anak kembar itu kedua-duanya lelaki, maka nama-nama yang dipersetujui adalah seorang "Hang Tuah" dan seorang lagi "Hang Jebat". Pada 17hb Mei 1965, Sagiyah selamat melahirkan dua orang puteri kembar, dan kami namakan mereka Farah Salizah dan Farah Suhanah.Pada 23hb Julai 1973, Sagiyah telah melahirkan putera tunggal kami, dan kami berpakat memberi beliau dua nama : Sagiyah memilih nama pertamanya "Ariff", dan saya nama keduanya, "Tuah" menjadi "Ariff Tuah".Sagiyah mencadangkan supaya saya memperbaiki latihan ilmiah yang di tulis pada tahun 1960, dan diterbitkan untuk dihadiahkan khas kepada putera tunggal dan anak bongsu kami, Ariff Tuah. Hasilnya adalah buku yang tidak sepertinya ini. Saya ucapkan berbanyak-banyak terima kasih kepada Dato' Dr Shamsudin Kassim, Naib Canselor Universiti Utara Malaysia (1993-1998) yang secara tulus ikhlas membantu membaiki penulisan ini.
