Overview: In juni 2010 ruilde Peter Vandermeersch zijn baan als hoofdredacteur van De Standaard voor die van hoofdredacteur van NRC en verruilde hij Brussel voor Amsterdam. Intussen overweegt hij ook serieus om zijn Belgische paspoort om te ruilen voor dat van Nederland.In dit boek gaat hij op zoek naar het Nederland waar hij zo van wil houden. Hij kwam terecht in het debat over Zwarte Piet en zag hoe Oranje niet meer lijkt te kunnen voetballen. Hij leerde premier Rutte kennen als 'een man zonder eigenschappen' en telde te weinig vrouwen in de politiek. Hij keek hoe Parijs en Den Haag vochten om twee schilderijen en hoe een Grote Dikke Ik de mensen bezighield. Hij hoorde iemand Nederland vergelijken met het Sicilië aan de Maas en iemand anders Amsterdam met Disney. Maar toen een vriend van hem scherpe kritiek uitte op Nederland, nam hij meteen de verdediging van zijn nieuwe land op zich.Vijf jaar lang schreef Peter Vandermeersch twee keer per maand in De Standaard over Nederland en zijn inwoners. Hij probeert het land te vatten dat hem fascineert en begeestert, passioneert en soms afstoot. Aan Vlamingen probeert hij dit land uit te leggen. De Nederlanders houdt hij een persoonlijke spiegel voor.Peter Vandermeersch (Torhout, 1961) studeerde geschiedenis in Gent, journalistiek in Parijs en politieke wetenschappen aan Harvard. I have mixed feelings about this one. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. Just right down the middle.

I was pleasantly surprised. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Would probably read it again at some point.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
