Overview: Nel nome della croce parla dell'affermazione del cristianesimo nel IV secolo, ma dal punto di vista dei pagani e della cultura greco-romana. Da quella prospettiva, non c'è niente di eroico da celebrare e non mancano i documenti per testimoniarlo. Quando infine il cristianesimo divenne religione di Stato nell'impero, le leggi finirono l'opera di rimozione della cultura classica, imponendo a tutti la conversione al nuovo credo e condannando all'oblio gran parte della raffinata e antichissima cultura greco-romana. Si aprirono così, di fatto, le porte al millennio oscuro del Medioevo. Sono innumerevoli le opere che abbiamo perduto per sempre a causa del fanatismo profondo che animò quel periodo: magnifiche statue fatte a pezzi, roghi pubblici di libri, templi devastati, bassorilievi divelti, palazzi rasi al suolo. Dal punto di vista cristiano fu il periodo del «trionfo», ma per chi desiderava restare fedele agli antichi culti pagani e allo stile di vita tradizionale fu invece una sconfitta definitiva, al punto che lo scontro frontale tra la cristianità e il mondo classico che risuona in queste pagine non può non richiamare, fatalmente, le cronache dell'odierno Medio Oriente. Really enjoyed this one. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Glad I picked this up.
