Overview: Personlig skihistorie det gnistrer av Thor Gotaas er en av mange i skiløpernes andre rekke. Han vokste opp på 1970-tallets Hedmarken, der livet var kaldt, verden hvit og skogen nærmeste nabo. For Gotaas har langrenn vært glede og avkobling, kameratskap og svettedryppende slit. Thor Gotaas har feiret julaften i USA på rulleski i 35 effektive kuldegrader, finstudert leggmusklene til Bill Koch og løpt på glattisen med Petter Northug. Forfatteren har vært like mye en observatør som deltaker i sporten. Gymnaslæreren som gikk best på rim. OL-helten Ole Ellefsæter. Fåmælte skogsarbeidere. Skijenter fra Oslo vest for fine til å innlede samtaler med. Marit Bjørgen i bakkeintervall. Alle har de en plass i denne humoristiske hyllesten til langrenn, og forsøket på å beskrive dets sjel - sett fra en middels skiløpers ståsted. Jeg la merke til navnet vinteren 1979 - Mikkelsplass - det klang så fint og hørtes så skiløperaktig ut. Han gikk junior-VM den sesongen som 17-åring og var en virvelvind av en skiløper. I Nordbygda-rennet i november 1979 sto vi i en bratt motbakke langs løypa. Thomas Wassberg, Ove Aunli, Oddvar Brå og de andre store kara deltok, men dem hadde vi sett før. Den største nysgjerrigheten knyttet seg til junioren Pål Gunnar Mikkelsplass. Der! I bånn av bakken spratt en løper opp med kjapp frekvens som i en stumfilm, nikket hissig på hodet, som var litt på skakke, og beina var så vidt nedi snøen. Det sprutet i snø fra ski og staver. Det gikk fort og så enda fortere ut på grunn av frekvensen. Mikkelsplass var navnet og kjennetegnet var skigåing på hissigste nivå, på ungguttens måte, som om mål var rundt neste sving. Som om det var umulig å stivne i beina og tull å porsjonere ut krefter. Det så ut til å finnes en uendelighet av krefter. Vi hørte rykter om at han hadde vært med faren sin, som visstnok var postmann, og gått dalimellom i Hallingdal som smågutt og fått en enorm lungekapasitet. Han skulle ha båret tunge postsekker og blitt et naturbarn med oksygenopptak på over 90 milliliter. Jeg tvilte på ryktene, som typisk nok ikke stemte, for han, broren og faren var skogsarbeidere. Det luktet kvae av Mikkelsplass. Det raslet som en fjellbekk når han pratet hallingdøl. Mor Norge hadde igjen fostret en naturens sønn med langrenn i blodet. Ekspertene mente han ville sope med seg det som fantes av seiere, bare han ble senior.
