Overview: Achttien jaar geleden verscheen Boudewijn Büchs roman De kleine blonde dood, een verhaal over een vader die zich niet kan verzoenen met het leven, een zoon die worstelt met zijn identiteit en een kind dat daar de dupe van lijkt te worden. Het geheim van Eberwein is het lang verwachte vervolg op het boek dat herdruk op herdruk haalde. De roman pakt de draad op van het geknakte leven van de vader uit De kleine blonde dood en beschrijft het weervaren van de jongen zonder identiteit: een schrijvend verhaal van mislukking, onverwerkt verdriet en een desastreuze vaderbinding. De hoofdpersoon van de roman, die Boudewijn heet, gaat op zoek naar het verleden van zijn vader in Duitsland en komt zo op het spoor van een componist. In Duitsland neemt de roman een uitzonderlijke wending en krijgt het verhaal bijna detective-achtige trekken, maar er is ook - en vooral - plaats voor een immens verlangen naar de vader en het overleden kind. Het geheim dat de hoofdpersoon najaagt, spookt op onontkoombare wijze door de hoofdstukken, die elk op zich een spiegeling zijn van de hoofdstukken in De kleine blonde dood.Het geheim van Eberwijn is in verscheidene opzichten een bijzonder boek. Na jaren krijgt de lezer eindelijk meer inzicht in het verdriet dat De kleine blonde dood zo beklemmend maakt. De roman vertelt een zonder meer huiveringwekkende geschiedenis die stukloopt in een mapje dat opgeslagen bleek in een donkere, diepe, Duitse archiefkelder.Deze postuum verschenen autobiografisch getinte roman van Boudewijn Buch (1948-2002) bevat een aantal uit "De kleine blonde dood" bekende thema's: zijn vader, zijn overleden zoontje, de dood, de desillusie van de liefde. De hoofdpersoon (Boudewijn geheten!) in deze roman probeert in het reine te komen met zijn verleden, met name met zijn vader. Hij doet een uiterste poging om zijn vader te begrijpen, te doorgronden. De herinnering aan zijn vader is tweeledig. Enerzijds is er de onvoorwaardelijke liefde tussen vader en zoon. Anderzijds heeft de oorlog van de vader een mopperende en onbegrijpelijke man gemaakt. Een groot deel van zijn leven besteedt de vader aan de pianobewerking van een muziekstuk van de componist Eberwein, die indertijd een tekst van Goethe op muziek zette; een uitzichtloze onderneming. De roman is boeiend, vooral voor wie "Een kleine blonde dood" las, maar springt erg heen en weer tussen heden en verleden en soms mist de lezer een duidelijke verhaalstructuur.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
