Overview: Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 – 1860) – nemecký filozof, jeden z najvýznamnejších mysliteľov 19. storočia, tvorca voluntaristickej a iracionalistickej filozofie, často označovaný ako filozof pesimizmu, sa preslávil najmä svojím spisom Aphorismen zur Lebensweisheit (1851), ktorý v slovenčine vychádza pod názvom Životná múdrosť. V brilantných úvahách sa v ňom pokúsil podať „návod" na prežitie čo najšťastnejšieho života vo svete plnom utrpenia a neexistencie trvalého šťastia. V snahe prekonať svoje pesimistické chápanie ľudského bytia tento skeptik a znalec psychológie človeka odhaľuje rozličné aspekty a spôsoby ľudského života a ich kladné aj záporné stránky, dané naším vnútorným postojom k veciam, a snaží sa vysvetliť, v čom spočíva múdrosť v prístupe k životu a jeho zmysel, pričom za najvyšší druh šťastia považuje rozkoše duchovného charakteru. Okrem úzkeho okruhu prostriedkov, ktoré im na to slúžia, nepoznajú nič iné; ich duch je prázdny, a preto necitlivý na všetko ostatné. Najvyššie pôžitky, pôžitky duchovné, sú im neprístupné. Márne sa usilujú nahradiť ich tým, že si občas dovolia prchavé, zmyslové rozkoše, ktoré si nevyžadujú veľa času, ale zato stoja veľa peňazí. Ak im šťastie bude priať, na konci života ako výsledok budú mať skutočne veľkú hromadu peňazí, ktorú potom zanechajú potomkom, aby ju rozmnožili alebo premrhali. Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. Still a good book.
