Overview: Renomovaný britský historik moderních dějin Ian Kershaw, mj. autor dvojdílného životopisu Adolfa Hitlera, v této práci navazuje na předchozí knihu Do pekel a zpět. Evropa v letech 19818–1949, již věnoval nejtragičtějšímu období evropských dějin 20. století (vyšla v Argu v roce 2017). Ve druhém díle se Kershaw zabývá poválečným vývojem v rozdělené Evropě a sleduje vzestupy a pády, které Evropa žijící dlouho pod hrozbou jaderného nebezpečí a v trvalé úzkosti, zažila. Evropané prošli zkušeností, již Kershaw popisuje jako „jízdu na horské dráze", ať už kvůli řadě událostí, které pro ně mohly skončit katastrofou, či proto, že přestali být do velké míry pány vlastního osudu a stali se jen figurkami ve hře tzv. studené války mezi SSSR a USA. V 90. letech sice Evropa dosáhla jistých úspěchů: rozpadl se komunistický blok i sovětské impérium a Německo se znovu sjednotilo, avšak zrychlující se proces globalizace způsobil komplikace a krize po roce 2008 Evropany jasně varovala, že mír ani stabilita nemusejí trvat dlouho.Kershaw podává velmi čtivý obraz současného světa kolem nás a se smyslem pro detail nám nabízí odpovědi na otázky, které jsou víc než aktuální.
