Overview: In 1879 a young Victorian girl left her small home village of Offchurch in Warwickshire, England to travel to Russia. Her name was Amy Coles and she was just nineteen years old and undertook the whole journey unaccompanied.She was going to spend four years with the Alexeiff family as a governess to two girls, Vera and Olga. The Alexeiffs were Russian nobility and during her time with the family she visited various European countries, meeting a wealth of interesting and influential people, including the Tsar.Over these four years she wrote many letters to her family recounting her remarkable experiences, and extracts from these form part of this book. Fifty years later, at the age of 71, she wrote a memoir of this remarkable time in her life. The letters, her memoir and research on the people she met and the places she visited have all been collated into this informative book.

A solid read. It held my attention, even if a few things were a little predictable. I'd probably recommend it to a friend.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Worth the time and money.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.
