Overview: Ergens op de bodem van de Stille Oceaan liggen nog de restanten van een Nederlandse drukpers, overboord gegooid in 1824 toen op het schip dat de pers vervoerde muiterij uitbrak. Het is een van de vele markante lotgevallen rondom boeken en boekhandel in het voormalige Nederlands-Indië die Lisa Kuitert in dit boek op aanstekelijke wijze onder de aandacht brengt. Werd in de kolonie dan gelezen? Waren er dan uitgevers, boekhandels, drukkerijen? Ja, heel veel zelfs. Geschreven op palmbladeren, gekerfd in houtblokken of ge(steen)drukt met inkt van de damarboom: in de koloniale geschiedenis waren boeken belangrijk. Zakenmensen en idealisten uit Nederland trotseerden talrijke gevaren zoals tijgers, kannibalen en schipbreuk, maar ook censuur om in de lange negentiende eeuw de reis te maken naar de Oost en daar een boekhandelsbedrijf op te zetten. Zij namen Indonesiërs in dienst die zo het vak leerden en vervolgens zelf een bedrijf begonnen. En dan blijkt dat boeken geen neutrale goederen zijn, maar dat de boekcultuur sterk heeft bijgedragen aan de opkomst van de onafhankelijkheid van Indonesië.

Really enjoyed this one. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.

Glad someone recommended this to me. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Would probably read it again at some point.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. Not bad at all.

It was okay. It felt a bit repetitive in the middle. Could have been shorter. Just right down the middle.
