Overview: Şeyh San'an hikâyesini Feridüddin Attâr'ın eşsiz eseri Mantıku't-Tayr'dan öğrendik. Mecazlarla, istiarelerle dolu hikâye "Şeyh San'an, zamanın piriydi... yüceliğine dair ne desem, hepsinden de üstündü, ileriydi..." beytiyle başlıyor ve sırlarla dolu hikâye belli ki bir şey anlatmak istiyordu. Alışılmış olanı aşan konusuyla, zâhir ve bâtın çatışmasının Şeyh San’an’ın şahsında ve çevresinin nezdinde bir deneyime dönüştüğü ve manalar evreni meydan getirdiği bu hikâye bir rüya ile başlar. Rüyasının peşine düşen Şeyh San'an bütün yapıp ettikleriyle herkesi şaşırtır. En zorlu sınavlardan geçer: Aşk ve zillete düşmek… Attâr’ın verdiği hükümle söyleyecek olursak: “İster zâhit ol, ister kötü kişi… canını terk ettin mi, âşıksın.” Nitekim Attâr’dan 200 yıl sonra Nesimi de Şeyh San’an hikâyesine telmihen “Ar u namus şişesini taşa çaldım kime ne" diyecektir.Attâr’dan sonra ve onun etkisiyle Gülşehrî, Ahmedî, Mostarlı Hasan Ziyâî, Hüseyin Cavid ve Fahri Uğurlu gibi müellifler ya müstakil eserler kaleme almışlar ya da hikâyeyi ilgili eserlerinin bir bölümünde zikretmişlerdir. Hafız, Yunus Emre, Bağdatlı Ruhî, Nesimȋ, Sâmî, Süleyman Fehim, Kavsî, Namık Kemal gibi şairler şiirlerinde bir-iki beyitle Şeyh San’an’a telmihte bulunmuşlardır.Azerbaycan edebiyatının güçlü kalemlerinden olup ülkemizde eğitim gören, başta Abdülhak Hâmid, Rıza Tevfik ve Tevfik Fikret olmak üzere dönemin edebiyat çevrelerinde yer alan Hüseyin Cavid (1882-1941), Şeyh San’an hikâyesini manzum bir tiyatro eseri olarak kaleme almıştır. İstanbul Türkçesiyle 1912-1914 yılları arasında yazılan 1917 yılında basılan bu eser, ilk kez 1921 yılında sahnelenmiştir. Şimdi de İsmail Demirel’in uyarlamasıyla şiirsel dili korunarak hikâye şeklinde Büyüyenay kitaplığına katılıyor.Hüseyin Cavid’in Şeyh San’an’ı, dünya edebiyatında tasavvufun anlam dünyasının bir bütün hâlinde tiyatroya/sahneye tatbik edildiği ilk eserdir. Eleştirmenlere göre: “Dünya romantik edebiyatının bediî incisi olan Şeyh San’an eseri, romantik facia (trajedi) olmakla beraber, aynı zamanda tasavvufu sahneye getiren ilk dram eseridir. Hüseyin Cavid bu eserle hem ilk manzum tarihî facianın, hem poetik tiyatronun, hem de sufi-mistik tiyatronun esasını ortaya koymuştur.”
