Overview: Op welke wijze reageerden de bewindhebbers van de Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie op de grote veranderingen in de Europees-Aziatische handel aan het einde van de 17e eeuw? Die veranderingen hielden een enorme uitbreiding in van deze handel ten gevolge van de snel stijgende vraag naar Indiaas textiel. Dat leidde tot een felle concurrentie tussen de diverse Oostindische Compagnieën. Tegelijkertijd werd de VOC geconfronteerd met andere problemen: de territoriale uitbreiding en voortdurende oorlogen overzee deden de kosten voor de Compagnie in Azië hoog oplopen, terwijl de lange tijd zo winstgevende intra-Aziatische handel van de VOC met tegenslagen te kampen kreeg. Het gevolg was dat het VOC-bedrijf in Azië verliezen ging maken. Bij dat alles kwamen nog de Europese oorlogen: in het 'rampjaar' 1672 raakte de Compagnie in liquiditeitsproblemen. Bewind en Beleid bij de VOC analyseert de samenstelling van de bewindhebberscolleges van de Compagnie in de jaren 1672-1702 en de rol van individuele personen daarin. Veel aandacht wordt gegeven aan het financierings- en dividendbeleid bij de Compagnie, aan voorstellen tot redres en bezuiniging van de directie en aan activiteiten van bekende bewindhebbers als de diplomaat en regent Coenraed van Beuningen en de Amsterdamse burgemeester en wiskundige Joannes Hudde. Not bad, but not my favorite. It felt a bit repetitive in the middle. Could have been shorter. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

I was pleasantly surprised. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. A solid 5/5 for me.

Finished it in a couple of days. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Would probably read it again at some point.
