Overview: De oudste nog bestaande neutrale zelfstandige vakbond in Limburg bestond op 23 september 2019 al 75 jaar. Tijdens de jubilarishuldiging op 25 september in Auberge De Rousch in Heerlen is het boek 1944-2019 | 75 jaar Vakbond ABW gepresenteerd. Vakbondslid en archivaris/historicus Hans Thissen tekent voor de inhoud van het boek dat door Vakbond ABW in samenwerking met Stichting Historische Kring ‘Het Land van Herle’ op de markt komt. Ruim 300 jubilarissen van de Vakbond ABW kregen het boek cadeau.De bond is kort na de bevrijding van Zuid-Limburg opgericht als Algemene Bond van Werkers in het Mijnbedrijf (AWBM). Enkele dagen na de bevrijding van een groot deel van Zuid-Limburg, op 23 september 1944, namen mijnwerkers in het casino in Treebeek het initiatief tot de oprichting van deze nieuwe vakbond. Na enkele aanpassingen van de naam na de sluiting van de Nederlandse steenkolenmijnen heet de organisatie nu Vakbond ABW. Het is de jongste- en misschien minst bekende vakbond in Nederland. In tegenstelling tot de oude vooroorlogse bonden bleek na de oorlog dat de AWBM geen nieuwe wijn in oude zakken was. Zij was van alle smetten vrij en anders dan de confessionele bonden. Werkers in het mijnbedrijf wilden na de Tweede Wereldoorlog een andere aanpak, omdat ze genoeg hadden van de andere bonden die vóór de oorlog meer bezig waren met interne en onderlinge strijd dan met het behartigen van de belangen van hun leden. Enkele bonden stelden volgens hen tijdens de oorlog een niet-vaderlandse houding ten toon. Ondanks keiharde repressie door de bisschop, de confessionele bonden en de burgemeester van Heerlen ging de bond niet ten onder en wist zij de communistische inbreng buiten de deur te houden.De ABW schroomde niet actie te voeren en trad regelmatig keihard op tegen instanties die de rechten van de bondsleden beknotten of met voeten traden, terwijl de andere belangrijke mijnwerkersbond wel overleg voerde, maar meer in de trant van wat we nu het ‘poldermodel’ noemen en waarbij de geit en de kool gespaard bleven.In dit boek geeft Hans Thissen, bijgestaan door enkele anderen die een bijdrage aan deze bundel leverden, een overzicht met hoogte- én dieptepunten van het werk van de Vakbond ABW en voorlopers gedurende 75 jaar, waarbij de transformatie van de bond na de mijnsluiting niet is vergeten.

Finished it in a couple of days. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Will be looking for more from this author.
