Overview: Sedikitnya ada dua kecenderungan ekstrem yang ditunjukkan umat Islam beberapa dekade belakangan ini; Yang pertama dicirikan oleh sikap ketat dalam beragama, bahkan cenderung menutup diri; Yang kedua malah bersikap terlalu longgar dan terbuka sehingga mengaburkan esensi ajaran agama itu sendiri. Sikap ekstrem dalam beragama memang bukanlah fenomena baru dalam sejarah Islam. Sejak periode yang paling dini, sejumlah kelompok keagamaan telah menunjukkan sikap ekstrem ini. Sebut saja misalnya yang paling menonjol adalah Khawarij dan Murjiah.Munculnya kecenderungan-kecenderungan ekstrem dalam beragama ini, bukan saja telah merugikan Islam dan umat Islam, tetapi juga bertentangan dengan karakteristik umat Islam yang oleh al-Qur'an disebut sebagai ummatan wasathan (QS. al-Baqarah [2]: 143), yaitu umat "tengahan", "moderat", "adil", dan "terbaik". Karakter dasar ajaran Islam yang moderat saat ini tertutupi oleh ulah sebagian kalangan umatnya yang bersikap radikal di satu sisi dan liberal di sisi lain. Kedua sisi ini tentu berjauhan dengan titik tengah (wasath).Mengedepankan sikap moderat memang sangat bersesuaian dengan anjuran ayat di atas (dan ayat-ayat al-Qur'an lainnya yang senafas), tetapi harus disadari sejak dini bahwa penerapannya bukanlah perkara gampang. Untuk itu perlu upaya-upaya rintisan agar "moderasi" atau wasathiyyah menjadi acuan berpikir, bersikap, dan bertindak umat Islam. Not bad, but not my favorite. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Glad I picked this up.
