Overview: Hanna Dyâb, chrétien maronite d’Alep, fait le récit du voyage effectué dans sa jeunesse en compagnie du Français Paul Lucas, au début du xviiie siècle. Son texte en arabe nous est parvenu sous la forme d’un manuscrit unique, inédit à ce jour, conservé à la Bibliothèque vaticane.Le périple conduit l’auteur d’Alep à Tripoli, Saïda, Chypre, puis en Égypte, d’où il rejoint la Libye, puis Tunis. De là il passe à Livourne, Gênes et Marseille, avant de gagner Paris, où son séjour culmine avec sa réception à Versailles dans les appartements de Louis XIV. Sur le chemin du retour, il passe par Smyrne et Constantinople, d’où il rejoint Alep en traversant l’Anatolie en caravane.Conteur hors pair, Hanna Dyâb fut l’informateur d’Antoine Galland pour une douzaine de contes des Mille et Une Nuits, notamment Aladin et Ali Baba. Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Glad I picked this up.

Such a great read. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Would probably read it again at some point.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Worth the time and money.
