Overview: "Gilgi" (1931) und "Das kunstseidene Mädchen" (1932) werden zu Beststellerromanen der jungen Irmgard Keun. Am Ende der Weimarer Republik sind sie Spiegelbilder der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung in der jungen Demokratie und liefern mit ihren Protagonistinnen Vorbilder für eine neue Generation von Frauen. Keuns Heldinnen Gilgi und Doris verkörpern den damaligen Modetypus der "Neuen Frau" und formulieren die gesellschaftlichen Aufstiegswünsche der kleinen Angestellten. Sie sind sportlich, tragen Bubikopf, wirken selbstbewusst und emanzipiert und bestehen auf ihr Recht der vorehelichen Liebesbeziehung. Ihre Entwicklung im Verlauf der Romane lässt aber erahnen, dass Gilgi wie Doris vor allem in Bezug auf ihre Geschlechterbeziehungen keineswegs so modern sind, wie sie vorgeben. Seit den 1980er Jahren gelten Irmgard Keuns Debütromane vor allem in der feministischen Literaturforschung als Vorzeigemodelle der emanzipatorischen Literatur. Allerdings sind die Protagonistinnen in beiden Romanen eher Zerrbilder der zeitspezifischen Weiblichkeitsentwürfe und der damit verbundenen Vorstellungen von Emanzipation. Wie es Irmgard Keun mit ihrer besonderen humorvollen bis satirischen Schreibweise gelingt, ihre Heldinnen einerseits nach Emanzipation strebend, andererseits in alte Geschlechterrollen zurückfallend darzustellen, will diese Arbeit vor dem Hintergrund der gesellschaftlichen Stellung der Frau in der Weimarer Republik und zeitgenössischer Bilder der "Neuen Frau" kritisch beleuchten. Verbunden werden hierbei sozialgeschichtliche, sozialpsychologische und biographische Deutungsmuster. Ebenso wird eine formalästhetische Deutung - wie die Einordnung in die Neue Sachlichkeit - mit der inhaltlichen Analyse verknüpft. Abschließend wird auch auf die Frage der Aktualität beider Werke unter Bezugnahme der heutigen gesellschaftlichen Stellung der Frau kurz eingegangen.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.
