Overview: Questo lungo racconto è una «scheggia» sanguinosa del terrore rosso in Siberia, ai tempi di Lenin. Scritto nel 1923, è apparso in Russia solo nel 1989, sulla stessa rivista («Luci della Siberia») che più di sessant’anni fa lo aveva rifiutato. E si capisce perché: con impressionante vigore narrativo Zazubrin «accumula una quantità di orrori assolutamente inconcepibile su una così piccola tela», come riconobbe subito Pravduchin nella sua prefazione-fantasma a La scheggia, che rimase anch’essa inedita. Ma il punto decisivo è che l’orrore viene qui raccontato dalla parte di chi lo commette, un cekista che da taglialegna teme di poter diventare egli stesso una delle schegge che inevitabilmente «saltano quando si abbatte il bosco», come dice un sinistro proverbio russo. La narrazione è una sequenza di atrocità in nome di «Lei» («Lei» è la rivoluzione), che poi si trasforma in una ridda di incubi, deliri, ebbre riflessioni nella mente del protagonista, ormai incapace di sostenere il suo ruolo di carnefice. La potenza del racconto, che ricorda Babel’, e l’unicità della testimonianza fanno di questo breve libro una delle più memorabili scoperte fra i molti testi disseppelliti in questi anni in Russia.

I was pleasantly surprised. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Worth the time and money.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Would probably read it again at some point.
